It has been a busy year in Technology, Grades 3, 4, 5 & 6 have been working hard learning how to use program coding, research online efficiently, practice typing and our Google Apps for Education software.
Grade 3 has been using the typing program Typing.com to learn and practice their typing skills. They participated in the World Wide Hour of Code and continued coding using the program Scratch.mit.edu. They used Scratch to animate “sprites” and backgrounds using coding bricks including creating/drawing their own sprites and background. Students working in Google Sheets created original pixel art drawings that they printed using the color printer. Students just completed a lesson on researching on the internet using keywords and practicing with the program Search Shark on Digital Passport. Currently, students are learning how to keep their private information safe when using resources on the internet.

In Grade 4, students are practicing their typing skills using Typing.com and advancing towards the intermediate typing level. They participated in the World Wide Hour of Code and continued to learn coding using the program Scratch.mit.edu. In Scratch, they learned to animate “sprites” using brick coding and then learned how to create/draw their own sprite and background which they also coded. Students learned the program Google Slides by creating a slideshow about their favorite animal in the zoo. By accessing the San Diego Zoo for Kids http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/ and researching information about what their animal eats, his habitat and one fact they created a slide show to present to the class. We just completed a lesson on searching efficiently online for information using keywords that obtain better search results. They practiced by researching specific information about dogs. We are currently learning how to keep private information safe when using online resources and will practice by examining websites that ask registration information.
In Grade 5, students continue to advance through our typing program Typing.com. They completed their group projects on the topic of Cyberbullying/Bullying creating slides shows in Google Slides and Powtoons to present their research information to the class. After participating in the World Wide Hour of Code, they learned the program Scratch.mit.edu and continued to code using animations and sprites. They learned to create/draw their own sprites and backgrounds and how to make simple games using code bricks in Scratch. After Scratch, students continued to learn code using the program Code Combat which is a self directed tutorial that teaches students how to code using python code language to solve game puzzles. We are starting a lesson using Google Sheets to create a spreadsheet budget and chart using a pretend weekly allowance of $25.00.
In Grade 6, students continue to advance their typing skills using the program Typing.com. They also completed their group projects on Cyberbullying/Bullying and presented their research using Google Slides, Powtoons, Prezi and Infographics. Students participated in the World Wide Hour of Code and continued learning Scratch.mit.edu and the program Code Combat. Currently, students will be researching non-profit organizations on Cape Cod and creating a spreadsheet in Google Sheets that will distribute a pretend donation of $1000.00 to at least 3 organizations of their choice.
We are looking forward to ending the year with the 3-D drawing program Google Sketch-Up, video game design, paint .net and Windows Movie Maker.
